Just because the sun is shining and the days are long and warm doesn’t mean that I can let down my guard. I keep a more or less constant eye on the geo-political nightmare unfolding in most areas of our planet (gulf oil gusher, phoney wars, chemical agriculture, the GM horror story, etc) and I continuously ask why are ‘they’ so dedicated to destroying every thing of beauty and leave a wasteland that will last for generations. The answer is simple – the lust for money and power - it just has to stop.

KRG helps all those awakened and awakening beings to the activities of a relatively small number of people who wield unjustified amounts of power in a devolutionary agenda. Information is power and if you know the real truth then you can become a force for freedom and thereby make informed decisions in areas such as, our personal food supply, maintenance of good health and our ability to look after ourselves in a good way.

I have had to deal with some involved personal issues – the deaths of my brother and a dear friend, business difficulties etc. I now have a new and beautiful relationship (and we know what this can do to the work ethic!). It is summertime and I have to attend to my garden if I’m to eat my own produce for the coming year, so this has lead to a slowing down of the activities of KRG, but have no fear, we will be back as the nights become longer and I have more time to devote to the project. I restate our vision for the immediate future here: to awaken people locally and nationally to the bigger picture, and offer hints, tips and clues (Growersark.org coming soon to a mountain near you) to assist in navigating through an unknown and increasingly chaotic future for our-cellves, our families and our loved ones

Growersark.org website is being built and will be a repository of valuable information for each of us, as we become more and more responsible for ourselves at every level. For example, if you require a water filtration system specifically designed for the elimination of fluoride, you will be able to find one or if you wish to scan a plant list of edible perennial plants that will grow without trouble in our locality, you will find it there. And much more!

KRG now has an office space in Tralee which will develop as an information and communication centre Regular film nights and meetings with guest speakers will happen during this winter. From this space we will be able to coordinate responses to current local issues, such as our ongoing effort to eliminate flouride from the water supplies of Kerry. I will keep everyone posted as to activities at the office, known as the ‘I Hub’

NaturalNews.com

Originally published June 18 2010
by Mike Adams, the Health Ranger, NaturalNews Editor

(NaturalNews) What’s most striking about the present BP oil catastrophe is not that it is an aberration but rather part of a dangerous pattern of mankind’s propensity to destroy nature. To destroy life in a large region of an ocean isn’t even new: The world already has over two hundred “dead zones” where fish can’t live because the ocean water has no more oxygen left thanks to the runoff effects of man-made chemicals.

Not content with mere deforestation and the vast destruction of biodiversity on land, Man has now expanded to destroy the oceans through overfishing, ocean acidification from CO2 emissions, agricultural runoff, flushing pharmaceuticals down the drain and unleashing crude oil directly into the ocean waters. It almost seems as if mankind were somehow bent on destroying itself by first destroying everything else on the planet just to see what happens.

Human beings, by any honest accounting, are repeat offenders engaged in crimes against nature. This article, by the way, isn’t some clever way to try to push us all toward a U.N.-controlled world government where every human action is regulated by environmental cops; it’s merely an observation of what’s really happening right now on our planet. I’m a Constitutionalist and remain strongly opposed to UN control as much as any properly-informed American. In no way do I support suppressing our individual freedoms or liberties. In fact, the problems here are not with the People but rather with the corporations.

The criminal corporations

It is the corporations that are committing these crimes against nature: Big Pharma’s mass poisoning of the waters, BP’s oil catastrophe crime against the planet in the Gulf Coast, the manufacture of Depleted Uranium shells by wealthy “defense” contractors, factory farming by meat producers, the poisoning of our farms by Monsanto and its campaign to dominate nature with genetically modified seeds… you get the picture. If you really look hard at the issues, it’s the corporations who are destroying our planet and thereby destroying future survivability for the rest of us.

It is the corporations, in essence, that are the criminals who are now destroying the very world around us, and if We the People continue to let these corporations engage in such actions, it won’t be long before we wake up and find ourselves enslaved in a Corporatocracy that has stolen from us the very world in which we had hoped to raise our children.

What is abundantly clear now is that corporations will do anything to make money, from the cruel and inhumane factory farming of cows to dumping millions of gallons of toxic chemicals in the ocean to try to sink the dead sea animals in the Gulf. Corporations would set fire to the entire planet if that act could somehow boost profits by 50% next quarter.

The unbridled greed that drives these corporations is simply incompatible with sustainable life on our planet. Through their careless, greed-driven actions, corporations are threatening YOUR life and the lives of your children.

I say enough is enough.

An armed revolt against the corporations?

There is already some mainstream talk about arresting the CEO of British Petroleum for his crimes against nature. It will never happen, of course, because these corporations wield too much power over government entities. We’ve seen it time and time again: Corporations are almost never held accountable for their crimes.

It is becoming increasingly clear that any action to hold these corporations accountable for their actions must come from the People — most likely in the form of a dedicated revolt, or perhaps even an armed “mass citizens’ arrest” of the corporate criminals.

Imagine ten thousand armed, angry citizens from Texas, Louisiana and Florida converging on the BP headquarters in Houston, led by a local Sheriff, marching in and arresting all the top CEOs of British Petroleum. That’s the kind of action that needs to start taking place if any justice is ever to be found in our modern world of corporate corruption and government collusion.

When it comes to corporate crimes, the justice system has utterly failed. The corporations that commit crimes are almost never held responsible. Consider the aftermath of the Goldman Sachs fiasco in 2008 – 2009, when Wall Street banksters ripped off the American people to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars, and then got bailed out by the U.S. government with trillions of dollars in gift money. How is that justice?

Similarly, after drug giant Pfizer was found to have committed massive marketing fraud that violated federal law, the company was deemed “too big to fail” and was simply given a free pass by the government to stay in business, defrauding customers, states and nations. Pfizer set up a shell company to take the fall for its crimes, then went right back to business as usual. Read the story on CNN if you want to learn more: http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/04/0…

As CNN reports: Imagine being charged with a crime, but an imaginary friend takes the rap for you. That is essentially what happened when Pfizer, the world’s largest pharmaceutical company, was caught illegally marketing Bextra, a painkiller that was taken off the market in 2005 because of safety concerns. When the criminal case was announced last fall, federal officials touted their prosecution as a model for tough, effective enforcement. “It sends a clear message” to the pharmaceutical industry, said Kevin Perkins, assistant director of the FBI’s Criminal Investigative Division. But beyond the fanfare, a CNN Special Investigation found another story, one that officials downplayed when they declared victory. It’s a story about the power major pharmaceutical companies have even when they break the laws intended to protect patients…”

Whether it’s Big Pharma, Big Oil, Big Food or Big Agriculture, every large and powerful corporations gets away with murder because laws are never properly applied to them. BP is destroying an entire ocean — and the livelihoods of millions of people — and will probably get off with a large fine and a slap on the wrist. In two years, it will all be back to business as usual, polluting the oceans, destroying life and ignoring safety rules and regulations once again while the American people suffer.

More dangerous than terrorists

Corporations are a greater threat to our lives than terrorists. That much should be clear by now: When corporations poison our food supply with toxic chemical ingredients; when they poison our bodies with fraudulently-marketed pharmaceuticals; when they poison our oceans with careless oil drilling… they are threatening our lives and our livelihoods. They are destroying the only world we know, and they are proving themselves to be far more dangerous to our collective future than any terrorist organization.

The real terrorists, it turns out, have “Inc.” after their name. And if we really want to go after the terrorists who present a clear and present danger to our health and lives, we must rise up against the corporate machine that now controls our media, our food, our sick-care system, our patents, our elected officials and our energy. We must gather our forces to make legally-justified citizens’ arrests of those at the top who are responsible for these atrocities against nature and the People. We must unite out of a common desire for survival against the corporate criminals who are destroying our very futures as we speak.

We must seek the aid of the local Sheriffs, Constables and community law enforcement officials who would join us in making these arrests, and then we must march on the corporate headquarters of these criminal corporations, right through their front doors and into their corporate offices where arrests will be made at gunpoint.

And why gunpoint? Because corporations do not respect law, nor ethics, nor morality, nor compassion towards others. They only respect one thing: force. So we must reluctantly use force — backed by the common sense of common law — to make these corporations stop destroying our planet and our livelihoods. I’m not saying we march in there and shoot them; I’m saying we march in and arrest them and bring them to trial in local courts, with local jurors who can make local commonsense decisions about what to do with these criminal corporate executives.

The feds cannot be trusted on this. We must deal with these corporations on a local level, with the widespread support of the everyday people whose lives are being destroyed by these corporations.

The extinction of the human race

This is more than just holding corporations accountable for specific crimes such as poisoning the Gulf Coast; it’s about our very survival. We’re not merely talking about small, local damage to specific regions or industries here — we are talking about the possibility of the extinction of the human race.

If the world’s powerful corporations are allowed to continue operating as they have done, they will destroy our world and cause the collapse of human civilization. We cannot survive when suffocated under a cloud of chemical toxicity, financial fraud, genetically-modified seeds and widespread environmental destruction. Corporations are incapable of acting within the guidelines of long-term sustainable living. Their power and reach are now so great that they have the capacity to destroy modern civilization (which is quite fragile already).

Rising up against the corporations now means fighting for our very survival. What BP has made as clear as day is that we must now make a choice: We can choose to appease powerful corporations and exempt them from any real enforcement of rules, regulations or common sense; or we can take a stand against them, arrest their top executives, shut down their operations, revoke their corporate charters and set course in a new world without the destructive influence of endless greed backed by incessant profit-taking.

The worship of profit has become a scourge on human civilization. Unbridled greed is now our curse. “Economic activity”, taken as a lone figure without the context in which it was generated, holds no measure of real value, and it should never been pursued for its own sake.

We must now shift our consciousness to a new era of the protection of life. We must value quality of life, not imaginary numbers in a bank account, and quality of life is a complex, interdependent equation that necessarily involves the sustaining of all the diverse ecosystems that now remain on our planet. For humans to live sustainably, happily and abundantly, we must stop destroying nature and start protecting it. We must be its steward, not its exploiter. And those corporations engaged in the mass destruction or poisoning of living ecosystems must be courageously arrested as criminals and prosecuted for their crimes against both the People and the planet.

There is no other way that we will survive the next century. Poisoning our planet on such a massive scale in an inexcusable act. We the People will either rise up against it, or we shall be destroyed by it.

I, for one, am willing to fight for our survival. Because I don’t want human civilization to just be a sorry footnote in the history of life on planet Earth.{SubscribeHealthRangerBlock}

This one’s an updated re-post on fluoridation of water. Before I get into some of the evidence, I would like to also highlight the point made my many that it is basically forced medication, which is why many water authorities around the world have no qualms about considering other ingredients, such as the Japanese. (http://www.imt.ie/opinion/2009/05/lithium_for_water_supply.html)

Of course the consideration of putting Lithium into drinking water is another problem-reaction-solution event:

After training young people to commit suicide they then say ‘oh look, if we add lithium to the water it will lower the suicide rate…’ yet again, GIVE ME A BREAK, turkeys!

‘Fluoride.’ Smile, it’s natural. That’s what you will see as a caption if you look at the http://www.fluoridenow.com.au/ ADA website. Whilst it may be true that fluoride does occur naturally, there are different types. But saying “it’s natural” is really irrelevant to the issue of adding it to drinking water. Uranium occurs naturally. Arsenic occurs naturally. So what? We don’t add them to the water just because they occur naturally. That should be the first signal that the ADA are on a propaganda campaign to convince you that it’s all natural and safe. They don’t mention that the fluoride that they add to the local water supplies is actually toxic industrial waste, a byproduct from a chemical fertilizer manufacturing process. I called the Water Corporation and the person I spoke to confirmed that in Perth, this is supplied by CSBP from their fertilizer manufacturing process. In Western Australia and other parts of the world, Fluoride is added via legislation. In WA this is called the Fluoridation Act and has been in place since 1966. Many developed Nations commenced water fluoridation after WW2. Addition of Fluoride to water was a tried and tested method used by the Nazis and Soviets in order to pacify their prisoners. That’s presumably what the ADA website is telling you when they say on their website ‘For more than 60 years science has supported water fluoridation’. Sodium Fluoride is listed with the EPA as a ‘rat poison.’

The ADA website, like many other ‘credible’ organizations will tell you that fluoridation is natural, and good for your health, and there are no adverse health impacts. I wonder if the ADA gets any funding from manufacturers of toothpaste? Take for example a 2006 Harvard affiliated journal which published a report linking fluoride to increased rates of rare bone cancers in boys. Dr Chester Douglass has been investigated and it was found that he had a conflict of interest as he was on Colgate’s payroll as editor for their ‘oral healthcare report’. He was effectively paid $1 Million to do the study, the results of which appear to have been misrepresented to give the desired outcome.

The fact that the Australian ADA gives a completely one sided response under its ‘FAQ’s’ should be another signal to anyone unsure what to believe, that they are being subjected to propaganda. Whilst they do refer to reports and studies which support their claims, notice how few and far between their references are to support them and some of the ‘supportive’ reports do not definitively say that there are no health impacts.

They say that there are no health impacts. The site also attempts to brand Fluoride as a vitamin when responding to the question ‘is adding fluoride medication’ and then saying it’s like adding vitamin B to food. The site also tries to downplay the toxicity, (which sits between lead and arsenic on the scale) by saying that the toxicity is related to how much is in the water, so that’s ok then. I guess on that basis they could throw in a bit of plutonium as long as it’s in small doses?

The site lists so many claims. Fluoridation of water doesn’t hurt the environment, and it even cites a couple of reports which state that there is no credible evidence to suggest adverse health impacts.

I Googled ‘Adverse health impacts fluoridation’ and got 1.36 million results.

So according to the ADA, there are no health risks from fluoridation. They perhaps haven’t noticed that the incidence of hip fractures in men is up to 40% greater for residents in fluoridated regions than no fluoridated areas. They haven’t read the toxic effects of fluoride

The impact of fluoride on the brain and its ability to reduce IQ is mentioned in this Fluoride Alert summary which reports on the results of 18 studies which looked at the impacts of fluoride on the brain . Infowars reported on the health impacts on the brain back in February infowars health impacts of fluroide on the brain or this link between fluoride and arthritis, known about since the 1930’s fluoride arthritis link

there is a report here which details the fluoride impact on the Thyroid Gland or low level fluoride causes sperm damage in animals and the impact on the kidneys, bone disease, immune system, cancer , as well as impacts on the gastrointestinal system and pineal gland (brain) the website www.fluoridealert.org has a large numbers of reports and documents relating to the health impacts including this link which has grouped the adverse health impacts of fluoride into 18 types of adverse impacts from fluoride

Fluoride is any salt of hydrofluoric acid, containing the Fluoride ion. Fluoride is any compound containing fluorine. It is a bio accumulative substance. Many reports that have stated that the levels of fluoride in water are too low to be toxic, but don’t comment that there are commonly found foods which cause the level of fluoride ingestion to be much higher than the ‘safe’ levels talked about in such articles. Tea, for example contains fluoride in greater concentration than any other food and also massive levels of aluminium. fluoride levels in tea and as this from the www.nofluoride.com site, shows that if you had a bowl of cereal and a coke you would have exceeded your RD intake of fluoride by 130%. how much fluoride in our foods?

This letter from Davis at the University of Calfornia is a telling explanation for the pro-fluoridation reports distortion of statistics

In 1952 the ‘Delaney Committee’ Hearings on fluoride found that there was no actual scientific basis for adding fluoride to prevent tooth decay. They recommended that more research be carried out. Their recommendation was ignored.

In 1965 the US Public Health Report stated “ Fluorine accumulates in all soft tissues; and that the levels in different tissues are not consistently high or low in different individuals.

In 1982 a Harvard Professor Dr J Patrick testified to Congress why most of Europe had rejected water fluoridation. One of his conclusions was that fluoride ‘..is an enzyme poison in the same class as cyanide.’ Dr Patricks Conclusions

In 1995, Dr Mullenix of the Toxicology Department of the Forsyth Research Institute stated in the Neurotoxicity of Sodium Fluoride in rats journal that ‘This is the first study to demonstrate that central nervous system output is vulnerable to fluoride, the the effects on behavior depend on the age at exposure and that fluoride accumulates in brain tissues….a generic behavioral…motor dysfunction, IQ defects and/or learning disabilities in humans. Substances that accumulate in brain tissue potentiate concerns about neurotoxic risk.’

In 1997 the City of Natick in the USA considered water fluoridation. Due to conflicting reports showing health impacts, they commissioned a team of scientists to produce what was called the ‘Natick Fluoridation Study Committee’ to look into the issue impartially, and make recommendations, which they did here In summary they recommended that the water NOT be fluoridated. They also listed over a dozen adverse health impacts.

In 2004 a Journal of the National Cancer Institute found a link between occupational exposure and cancer. 12 year study shows fluoride cancer link

In 2005, 11 EPA unions, representing over 7,000 environmental and public health professionals, demanded an end to water fluoridation

In 2006 the National Research Council conducted a risk analysis of water fluoridation in the USA. In addition to suggesting that fluoride levels should be reduced and concluded that ‘…the practice of water fluoridation should be re-evaluated.’ Read Fluoride Industry’s Toxic coup http://www.johnston-independent.com/fluoride-usa.htm Or check out the links here on the history and dangers of fluoride or some more here from the L.A. citizens for safe drinking water alcoa study said toxic waste is ok

In 2007 the issue was even reported on in MSM today tonight report on fluoride

The following link answers some of the common false statements made by the ADA and includes comparison between areas of fluoridation and non fluoridated areas. Of course from the cherry picked ‘explanations’ that residents in areas that have fluoride in the water have better teeth than areas that do not, there is the opportunity to make this appear to be the case by comparing areas with two completely differing socio demographics. Then again we are also told that there is no scientific evidence that there are any adverse health impacts by the pro fluoridelobby, when clearly there are.

Here are some statements that might help clarify the situation:

“I would advise against fluoridation, side effects cannot be excluded…” Dr A Carlsson, 2000 Nobel Prize for Medicine

“I am appalled at the prospect of using water as a vehicle for drugs. Fluoride is a corrosive poison that will produce serious effects on a long range basis. Any attempt to use water this way is deplorable.” Dr. C Heyd, Ex President, American Medical Association

“The EPA should act immediately to protect the public, not just on the cancer data, but on the evidence of bone fractures, arthritis, mutagenicity and other effects.” Dr W Marcus, Snr Toxicologist, EPA

The water is then disinfected with Chlorine and a process known as Chloramination, which is where chlorine and ammonia are added. Fluoride is added at the rate of 1mg/L.
Irish campaign group VOICE issues press release over fluoride risks to Irish children

Source: VOICE (Voice of Irish Concern for the Environment) Press Release, Dublin, Wednesday 25th November 2009

Yellow card shown to European Commission over fluoride risks to Irish children.

The formal dialogue session on Risk Assessment [1] between stakeholders and the EU’s scientific committees on Nov 20th in Brussels heard criticism of the Commission, as the risk manager, for failing to protect children from fluoride risks. Only in Ireland and parts of the UK are fluoridation chemicals allowed in drinking water, where there is now an epidemic of dental fluorosis in children.

“It’s a sad day for European science“ said VOICE’s campaigner against fluoridation, Robert Pocock,
when the EU’s Scientific Committee on the Environment and Health(SCHER) is accused of being unqualified for its task. Yet the 20,000 member International Society of Doctors for Environment (ISDE) made just such a claim, when the Commission asked SCHER for scientific risk assessment of fluoridation chemicals.”

ISDE declared that since fluoride chemicals act pharmacologically, SCHER’s lack of expertise in assessing medicinal substances is a serious impediment. In light of this major defect, the VOICE spokesman told the meeting, SCHER members should re-consider their role in this whole affair.

Pocock also said that it was six long years since the 2003 EU Drinking Water Seminar in Brussels, that the World Health Organisation in Geneva had promised within four months a similar risk assessment of the fluorosilicic acid in Irish drinking water, before he added “we are still awaiting it”.

Another yellow card was shown to the Commission for failing to abide by its own rules requiring Rapid Advice when an urgent public health threat demands it. With some sixty children in Ireland each month (plus another 120 in the UK) getting moderate or severe dental fluorosis, there is ample reason for the Commission to invoke Rapid Advice in order to protect childen from this unnecessary risk.

The Scientific Committee on New and Emerging Health Risks(SCENIHR) reported how it had engaged other EU agencies including the European Medicines Evaluation Agency(EMEA) in assessing antimicrobial risk, an initiative fully endorsed by the Commission. Yet when faced with the official Irish evidence of an epidemic of dental fluorosis in children in Ireland (and pro rata in the UK) caused by an unlicensed medicinal substance in these two member states, the Commission refuses to engage with EMEA, surely cause for another yellow card?

VOICE has already called for the CEO of EMEA to stand aside for this blatant failure to enforce pharmacovigilance in Ireland and the UK, one possible explanation for EMEA’s inaction being that its CEO Mr Pat O’Mahony is also CEO of the Irish Medicines Board. As the risk manager and medicines regulator within the Commission, EMEA should have enforced the relevant directive years ago. Instead the Commission has passed the buck to an EU scientific committee unqualified for the task. The clear losers in this regulatory failure are at-risk children and the credibility of EU science.

ANH Comment

Evidence of harm caused by water fluoridation with fluorosilicic acid exists right there amongst the communities who have no choice but to ingest it. Fluorosis is an effect that is easily observed, but questions have to be asked about what other parts of the body are affected by long-term ingestion of the substance, particularly in babies and the very young, who are much more vulnerable.

The fact that sixty children in Ireland each month (plus another 120 in the UK) are being allowed to develop moderate or severe dental fluorosis, and that this is being allowed to occur year after year, tells us all we need to know about how risk assessment [4] works in the EC…

It’s staggering that the newly revised recommended daily allowances (RDAs) for foods and food supplements [5] now have an entry for fluoride; even more staggering is the amount: 3.5 mg daily for adults! There is ample scientific evidence that habitual consumption of this amount of certain forms of fluoride, such as fluorosilicic acid over a lifetime is likely to lead to a host of adverse effects that go well beyond dental fluorosis.

18th December 2008

Europe’s supreme authority on food safety— and fluoride: Bad science, twisted rules or corporate manipulation?

Summary

Fluoride—the stuff that the dental profession, toothpaste manufacturers and some governments have been persuading us to use for years in an effort to reduce tooth decay—has now come under the scrutiny of Europe’s food safety watchdog, the Parma-based European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) [1]. EFSA have just released their Scientific Opinion on the safety of a particular form of fluoride, calcium fluoride, when used for “nutritional purposes” in food supplements.

In our review, we assess EFSA’s role in general and then, more specifically, its Opinion on calcium fluoride. We argue that the EFSA is working outside of its remit in evaluating calcium fluoride because its intended use is not nutritional, but rather medicinal. Ever since two particularly nasty forms of fluoride, sodium and potassium fluoride, made it on the two EU Directives, one dealing withfoods for particular nutritional uses [2], the other with food supplements [3], It was obvious something odd was going on. It seems ever more clear now that this system exists to give some of the biggest personal care and pharmaceutical manufacturers a simple, low cost regulatory route to getting their toxic products to the masses, whether we’re looking at effervescent tablets, caplets or other delivery systems.

We challenge EFSA’s approach to assessing our fluoride intake from drinking water sources, toothpastes and mouthwashes, using the case of the hypothetical Mr Regular—showing how easy it is to exceed safe intake levels even before a supplement taking calcium fluoride is added to the mix.

If you live in an area with fluoridated water, you use fluoridated dental care products, or you are thinking about using fluoride supplements, you should take the time to digest our review. Others of you, who are interested in how the regulators alter their scientific perspectives to suit particular outcomes, will find it just as relevant. EFSA may be able to hide behind the fact that it was Blackmores, the Australian supplement manufacturer, that submitted the original dossier, but who is really set to gain from this Opinion?

It really does look—as you’ll discover—as if EFSA has bent its own rules of risk assessment to give this toxic product the green light, in the primary interests of some large corporations.

It’s a pity they couldn’t just remind us to brush and floss our teeth properly, and reduce or cut out the sugar from our diet. That would surely be a more responsible approach.

EFSA – the European Food Safety Authority

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) [4], from the date of its establishment in 2002, was propelled—ahead of any European Member State government—into being the foremost authority on food safety in Europe. It is formally one of Europe’s institutions, joining the heady heights of the European Commission, the European Parliament and even the European Court of Justice, as part of the elite set of centralised authoritative or rule-making bodies that are increasingly replacing the sovereign rights of European countries.

Feeling pity for EFSA

But sometimes, and somewhat ironically considering the pain this authority is causing health-conscious consumers across Europe, we’ve allowed ourselves to feel sorry for the teaming and ever-expanding pool of Euro-scientists in EFSA’s HQ in Parma, northern Italy. Parma—yes, the very place from which that famous thin-sliced ham originates—is a city nestled in the fertile valley of the Po River in the heart of the richest of all Italian provinces, the Emilia-Romagna.

The picturesque centre of Parma, the city that hosts EFSA

Our pangs of pity have tended to stem from our knowledge of the sheer burden of EFSA’s workload, which includes evaluation of thousands of dossiers ranging from such things as different vitamin and mineral forms (which will be banned across the EU on 1 January 2010 if they get anything less than a positive opinion from EFSA) to an array of food additives and contaminants in food. EFSA scientists are now conducting risk assessments on botanicals in food supplements, and are worryingly declaring many herbs that have safety profiles demonstrating safety over thousands of years of usage in traditional medicinal cultures like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine, as “toxic, addictive or psychotropic”.

One of EFSA’s biggest challenges in its young history was its receipt in early January 2008 of some 43,000 dossiers containing substantiation evidence for generic health claims (under the terms of Article 13 of the Nutrition & Health Claims Regulation, No 1924/2006) for foods and food supplement ingredients.

When the pity evaporates

However, for many of us, our pity for the apparently over-burdened EFSA evaporated rapidly when EFSA issued negative opinions on valuable forms of vitamins and minerals, such as many of the most commonly used forms of vanadium [5] used by many to help manage blood sugar levels, or on half of the key compounds within natural vitamin E (all four tocotrienols) [6].

The pity even morphed into frustration or downright anger when EFSA’s accomplices at the European Commission decided, back in early 2008, to eliminate over 40,000 of the 43,000 generic health claims applications, many of them that had been painstakingly and sometimes expensively collated, by suddenly moving the goalposts [7] months after the applications had been received. A new essential criterion was suddenly introduced; one that wasn’t made clear before companies spent valuable resources preparing their dossiers prior to the late 2007 deadline given by most Member States. The criterion in question was a new requirement for human studies; any dossier not supported by human studies, irrespective of the amount of supporting evidence from biochemical, animal or other non-human studies, was simply cast out, one hopes into some efficient paper recycling system. This poor procedural and administrative process represents a travesty to the time, resources and paper that has been wasted. Small businesses, not the vast transnationals of Big Food and Big Pharma, were the primary losers, other than the forests that provided the reams of paper. And no one received as much as an apology for the radical shift in the goalposts that hurt, most of all, innovative smaller businesses with limited resources.

EFSA goes transparent on transparency

One positive recent outcome is the European Commission’s decision to issue a public consultation on EFSA’s transparency [8]. EFSA didn’t like it the last time ANH shone a spotlight [9] on their activities— and now they’re going to have the whole world scrutinising them! We know that EFSA claim to work hard to ensure their openness and transparency [10], but just how transparent will be the evaluation of the public comments on EFSA’s transparency? Let’s hope it’s not a(nother) stitch up!

Fluoride: why isn’t it a drug?

This one really takes the mustard! EFSA have released its opinion on the safety of food supplements containing calcium fluoride, [11]adopted on 27 November 2008. The Opinion is officially titled: “Calcium fluoride as a source of fluoride added for nutritional purposes to food supplements.”

“Nutritional uses for fluoride?!!!” I hear you say. Yes. Food supplements containing an ingredient that has little benefit, unless delivered at very low doses in its naturally-occurring forms (like calcium fluoride itself), where it plays a role in bone formation and mineralisation. But fluoride food supplements are not used for this purpose (as that would definitely make them medicines), their intended usage is based instead on the poisonous properties of fluoride salts which they contain—in other words, usage at dosages that kill bacteria in the mouth and thus, allegedly, prevent tooth decay (dental caries). The proposed delivery systems, as given in EFSA’s opinion, are “tablets, caplets, capsules, chewable tablets, effervescent powders and liquids.”

The real problem here is that these calcium fluoride supplements that are meant to be good for our teeth are intended to be used over and above those levels of fluoride that we already ingest in our diets, through drinking water and via dental or oral hygiene products.

Looks clear—but is it clear of fluoride? You could be ingesting more than 1 mg of fluoride for every litre of tap water you drink…

Now, why on earth is Europe’s premier food authority on food safety evaluating the safety, under the terms of the EU Food Supplements Directive [3], of something that is clearly not a food ingredient, and can be categorised in no other way other than as a medicine!

The definition of a medicine in European law (Directive 2001/83/EC, amended by Directive 2004/27/EC [12]) is any substance that is used either to “treat or prevent disease” or one that is used “with a view to restoring, correcting or modifying physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action” (Article 1(2), Directive 2004/27/EC [13]). If you haven’t got it already, that makes all foods fall under Europe’s drug definition, and it is only exclusions for products that are regarded as “clearly” foods, food supplements, cosmetics or medical devices, that can escape the clutches of this law (Recital 7, Directive 2004/27/EC [13]).

So, banzai! Fluoride cops it on both counts! Its only purpose is to prevent a disease, in this case dental caries, and it definitely has a pharmacological (drug-like) effect that is dose-dependent. Food supplements, under their own definition (Directive 2002/46/EC [3]) should have a nutritional or physiological effect. Well, killing bugs is more biocidal than it is nutritional or physiological, and the EU has a purpose built legal framework for such products, namely the Biocidal Products Directive [14]. But because the bugs otherwise cause a disease, a drug classification has to be closer to the mark.

So why isn’t the particular provision of European drug law that gives these laws supremacy over any other laws in Europe (Article 2(2), Directive 2004/27/EC [13]) tripped into motion?

There are no clear unequivocal explanations anywhere on how this situation has been allowed to continue. But the two most likely candidate hypotheses that fit the facts are:

the companies who want to fluoridate us through effervescent tablets, caplets, toothpastes, chewing gum and other delivery systems, know very well that their chemical of choice would outright fail any application for a drug licence, which requires extensive studies and clinical trials verifying both its effectiveness and safety, or;

these same companies don’t want to face the cost burden of paying for a drug licence, and they probably wouldn’t like the public to know that this material they’ve been profiteering from for years is a particularly nasty and insidious poison—a drug even. You see, that might negatively impact sales and force more of us health-conscious consumers into our health stores to find some fluoride-free toothpaste.

EFSA myopia

When you read EFSA’s full opinion on calcium fluoride, something strikes you immediately. Where is the opening section, common to their other opinions on nutrients, that assesses typical, natural intake levels for the nutrient in the diet, including estimates of the Acceptable Daily Intake (ADI)? It’s simply not there. The treatment is typical of a technological food additive and the only indication of the intended use is given in the opening line of the Introduction; “Fluoride supplementation has been used for years essentially to prevent dental caries especially if the fluoride concentration from drinking water is low.” This is akin to saying, “If you’re not getting enough of our anti-microbial compound through the water supply, you can take some pills that will help you kill the bugs in your teeth.” It’s really got very little to do with nutrition.

There are hints as to other uses, but, interestingly, these are not declared, despite a not inconsiderable literature on the role of natural fluorides, like calcium fluoride, on bone formation and repair. But given that EFSA’s terms of reference is to look at risk and not benefits (“why?” you may ask, given that all foods have both risks and benefits and shouldn’t we seek to have an understanding of both sides of the equation?), it would have given them a big headache. Especially when there is an even bigger literature on the adverse risks associated with fluoride exposure, ranging from bone fractures, skeletal and dental fluorosis and osteoporosis risk, through to its carcinogenic and mutagenic potential. Funny then, that EFSA—like the International Agency on Research on Cancer (IARC), based in Lyon, France, whose finding probably contributes to the fact that the majority of water supplies in the USA continue to be fluoridated—should categorise calcium fluoride as a non-carcinogen in humans.

Saying this, the picture is confused by an equivalent body of work, generally funded by pro-fluoride interests, that shows fluorides, but only the natural forms like calcium fluoride, can be used to build bone (although of a different biochemical and structural integrity compared with naturally grown bone) and even reduce cancer risk. It’s no wonder the controversy on fluoride never dies, especially when the studies on natural fluorides are used to support those on synthetic fluorides—including forms like fluorosilicic acid that are generally added to drinking water—which have an even worse safety profile.

Some, of more extreme mind, have of course suggested that fluoridation is part of a sophisticated genocide agenda, but here, respecting ANH’s principle of relying on substantiated evidence, we won’t go that far, as solid evidence supporting this view is wanting.

How does EFSA normally do its risk assessments?

The primary method that EFSA is using for its risk assessments on nutrients in food supplements is quite simple. EFSA evaluates all of the relevant evidence both on exposure and safety, determines what the highest level of exposure from foods, drinks and any other relevant sources might be in particular sub-sections of the population. Then it considers if the inclusion of the nutrient in the food supplement would take you above its particular, agreed ‘tolerable upper level’ of exposure. This is deemed as the highest level of exposure considered safe, so, logically, it is assumed that if you exceed this, you might be exposed to a significant risk.

In the case of calcium fluoride, the risk is not just a minor, transient and reversible risk, such as the loose bowel that accompanies very large, undivided oral doses of vitamin C or a niacin flush. Here we’re talking dental fluorosis, the unflattering mottling of the teeth that we see increasingly in areas where the population is mass medicated with related compounds, such as fluorosilicic acid in the drinking water supply and the sodium monofluorophosphate in a host of dental products common to people’s bathrooms.

What EFSA doesn’t elude to is that the very process that leads to the discoloration of children’s teeth—caused by the fluoride ion’s role in removing (demineralising) calcium—is almost certainly going on in less visible parts of our body, namely in our bones. The process is known, unsurprisingly as skeletal fluorosis [15] and it leads to increased bone fractures, just like osteoporosis which has similar effects, although different causes.

But when there are so many possible sources of fluoride, many of which are hard to regulate, exposure assessments are critical, especially if exposures are nearing the ‘tolerable upper level’ of intake. This is most definitely the case with fluoride.

The addition of fluoride to the drinking water supply, its addition to some chewing gums, perceived by most as confectionary products with no restriction on level of intake, and its inclusion on the majority of big name toothpastes and mouthwashes, is scientifically and medically irrational, given the huge variations in consumption rate between individuals occurs. Drinking water, mineral waters and chewing gum are not what one would call accurate delivery systems for a drug.

Mr Regular—and his daily fluoride hit

In its calcium fluoride opinion, EFSA looks at intake data from food and drink, mineral waters and tap water, but it doesn’t focus at all on population groups that might be exposed to all sources.

Multiple sources of fluoride in the bathroom

Imagine a day in the life Mr Regular, who has yet to become familiar with the risks associated with lifetime, all-source, cumulative exposures to fluoride. He gets up in the morning and freshens his mouth with a fluoridated toothpaste and mouthwash. He drinks several cups of tea during the day, where he’s ingesting fluoride both from the tap water and the tea, which naturally contains relatively large amounts of fluoride. In fact the World Health Organization reckons tea drinking alone can cause you to start losing minerals from your bone, leading to skeletal fluorosis [16]. Back to Mr Regular, he’s still not done with this fluoride for the day! He drinks a bottle of fluoridated mineral water to help wash down his lunchtime soup, made, guess what, it might be fresh but it’s still made using fluoridated tap water. After work, he goes down the gym and trains hard, requiring 3 litres of water to quench his thirst. Let’s not forget that during the course of Mr Regular’s busy day, he’s also consuming nearly an entire pack of chewing gum, every piece being laced with more fluoride. He then gets home and cooks his pasta and vegetables in fluoridated tap water, sips at a couple of mugs of fluoride-rich green tea as he watches the television news, and, finally, he succumbs to yet more fluoride when he brushes and then flosses his teeth, prior to using a big brand fluoridated mouthwash before bed. Mr Regular, exposed to the subliminal drip-feed from well-funded pro-fluoride interests, has simply not yet been able to appreciate that he had a choice; that he could have—with some effort and at greater cost—sought out fluoride-free toothpaste, floss and mouthwash in awkward corners of the shelves of his out-of-town supermarket and pharmacy complex. Or he could have rummaged around the shelves at his local health store.

When Mr Regular’s tea drinking habit alone put him over the safe limit, it’s not hard to appreciate that he could end up consuming 2, 3 or even 4 times more than the safe limit by the time you’ve considered all the possible sources of intake.

EFSA: twisting its own rules

In brief, one of EFSA’s big decision rules on risk assessment says that if there is any risk that a susceptible sub-population might exceed the scientifically determined upper safety limits—once dietary intakes from all sources have been taken into account—supplementation cannot be supported (Article 5, Directive 2002/46/EC). EFSA don’t want us, in good faith, it seems, to run the risk of consuming that additional amount that tips us over their pre-determined upper safety threshold. And it is exactly this concern that caused EFSA to judge negatively the sense in taking those forms of vanadium that are more bioavailable than those in food sources, such as shellfish.

But why does EFSA—arbitrarily it seems, with no explanation—suddenly change the rules for fluoride? EFSA even goes as far as saying in its opinion that it acknowledges that around 15% of UK children between the ages of 1 and 8, who are already exposed to fluoridated drinking water, could exceed the safe level if they were exposed to calcium fluoride “food supplements”.

The forgotten children: of Ireland and the UK

Wait on—these British children are a recognised sub-population and, what’s more, they are highly susceptible because, as kids, they’re busy laying down bone and other tissues while they’re growing. But EFSA, in contravention of the process it’s used to restrict us from many considerably safer and more beneficial nutrients, has ridden roughshod over these young British kids that it has itself identified. Making matters worse, it has shown a total disregard for Irish children, who are faced with one of the highest rates of dental fluorosis [17] in the world, meaning that they are already well into risk territory. This is because of the Irish government’s policy, unique across Europe, to fluoridate the majority of the country’s water supply. Yet, based on EFSA’s positive opinion, companies will carry on lacing fluoride into a wide range of products and Irish kids will continue to be coaxed by lurid advertising into consuming yet more fluoride in chewing gums and toothpaste.

Classic symptoms of dental fluorosis in a child

It seems that there is a multiple agenda. If the scientific method or procedure used by a regulator is constant, we are able to engage in constructive criticism of it, with a view to helping shape a more robust system that ensures consumers are adequately protected, while particular health-giving products are not forced to be withdrawn from the market.

But now we have something different: The banishment of precautionary risk assessment principles—when this provides a more suitable outcome—that we were beginning to think were indelibly embossed into the fabric of EFSA.

The common thread

The only common thread we are able to identity at this point, is that EFSA appears to be doing exactly what other regulators such as the European Commission [18] itself, the UK medicines regulator, the Medicines and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency (MHRA) [19] and the US’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) [20]have been exposed for doing in the past; working—ultimately—in the interests of the biggest corporations on the planet.

Click here to call for GMO ban:

http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/568/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=2049

Writing as if he were a genetic biologist, on March 29, 2010, Judge Robert W. Sweet of the Southern District of New York Federal Court ruled that genes cannot be patented. What that means for opponents of GMOs is huge. Judge Sweet ruled that the patenting of genes as if they were nothing but simple molecules is bad science and bad public policy. At stake is the notion that isolated DNA can be patented and owned, the very foundation upon which GMO patents rest. The case hinges on the question of whether isolated genes are fit material for patenting and ownership.

Without the legal permission to claim ownership of genes, the entire biotechnology industry is torn to tatters. And that cannot come soon enough for us here at the Natural Solutions Foundation. GMOs are not tested for safety after a single, company-run and -reported preliminary evaluation. They are merely assumed by the corrupt and dangerous FDA to be “substantially equivalent”, exposing the environment and everything in it to dangers whose magnitude may not make itself clear until decades have past. Once those decades have passed, the genetic material of every living thing on the planet could well be comingled and corrupted with the tampered genetic material.

At what cost? Cancer, infertility (don’t forget, a pantented gene that makes men and women destroy sperm cells was bought by Monsanto and Dupont “for commercialization”), auto immune diseases, allergies, fetal deaths, damaged immune systems, lethal allergies, smaller organs with holes and other damage in them, small birth weight, the list goes on and on. Then there are the super bugs and super weeds and the super saturation of the environment with the (on average) four times greater application of chemical toxins when GMO crops are grown. And the drought failures. And the consequences we do not yet know about, but will, with the passage of time.

“No”, said Judge Sweet in his historic decision, http://graphics8.nytimes.com/packages/pdf/national/20100329_patent_opinion.pdf, “simply identifying something that already exists in nature is not sufficient to patent it.” Whether combining genes which already exist in nature in ways that have never occurred in nature will be insufficient to patent these chimera or hybrid organisms remains to be seen.

This decision, however, gives a real shot in the arm to those who claim that GMOs should not be permitted, genes should not be patented and GMOs should be halted in their contaminating spread by a total and immediate ban on them. Click here, http://salsa.democracyinaction.org/o/568/p/dia/action/public/?action_KEY=2049, to add your voice to the growing number of folks calling for an immediate ban on GMOs and serious scientific investigation to determine how to undo their damage on animals, humans and the environment.

We are the last country to still fluoridate drinking water (71% of the population) in the EU. Guinness is NOT good for you. I asked them where they sourced the water for the brewery. – yes folks you guessed it – unfiltered municiple water. Dublin tap water – heres whats in it, apart from many of the pollutants talked about in the article below -Aluminum sulphate Calcium Polyelectrolite hydroxide Sulphuric acid, Hydrofluosilicic acid, and Chlorine gas.

8 MAR 2010

By: Christopher-Peter: Maingot

It was determined since 2004, through testing by various water utilities, whereby it had been discovered, that anywhere from 300, to 316 contaminants or pollutants, were found to exist in the tap water that Americans normally drink.

This was reported by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) and, based on the drinking water quality analysis, of almost 20 million records, obtained from state water officials.

After reading the report on EWG’s website, I then went through the actual list of the “pollutants/contaminants” by clicking on the tab labeled “Chemical Contaminants.”

Much to my surprise, I could not find such chemicals as; Acrylamide or Polyacrylamide. It was neither listed as a pollutant or a contaminant, in this tap water study…how strange?

The strange thing is: Acrylamide is used to make polyacrylamide materials. Polyacrylamide is used in the treatment of drinking-water, and waste water, where it is used to remove particles and other impurities. It is also used to make glues, paper and cosmetics. Polyacrylamide materials contain very small amounts of acrylamide.

What is the problem?

Acrylamide is known to cause cancer in animals. Also, certain doses of acrylamide are toxic to the nervous systems of both animals and, humans.

Further to this; it appeared to have been neglected for mention; that several states across the contiguous U.S., are artificially fluoridating their drinking water supplies, with toxic industrial chemical pollutants, e.g., Fluorosilicic Acid/Hydrofluorosilicic Acid (HFS/HFSA).

This malicious malpractice, or premeditated act, whereby official governmental agencies, are intentionally polluting drinking water supplies and, with poisonous (SKULL AND BONES) industrial pollutants, is widely being carried out.

It is also a common practice; recommended by the FEDERAL government, and implemented by many provincial and municipal governments across Canada too.

These fluoride chemicals, normally of “commercial grade,” are available 365 days a year, and typically from the State of Florida. The use of these chemicals, to artificially fluoridate drinking water supplies, is condoned by many publicly elected politicians. Therefore; certain politicians, and or civil service employees, are intentionally complicit in this premeditated contamination of our drinking water, with otherwise known to be; toxic, corrosive and carcinogenic industrial pollutants. Knowingly and purposely; it is purchased from CORPORATE suppliers, only to be added to our drinking water, further increasing the already heavy burdens, of contaminants in our body systems.

The chemicals in question are produced from “smoke-stack-scrubbers.”–They call them “wet scrubbers.”

They are pollution control devices, primarily used by the phosphate, aluminum and chemical industries, to capture fluoride gases produced in the production of commercial fertilizers and, other products.

After being captured in the scrubbers, the fluoride acid (hydrofluorosilicic acid), classified as a hazardous waste, is barreled up and, sold (commercial grade) unrefined to communities across North America. And, the rest of the World as well.

Communities/Municipalities then add hydrofluorosilicic acid to the public drinking water supplies. Its the primary fluoride chemical, used to artificially fluoridate water…this malpractice has ensued for over 40 years; albeit countless voices, in opposition to this mad and malicious, weird science.

Even if you don’t live in a community, where fluoride is added to the water, you’ll still be getting your dose of it; through cereals, sodas, juices, beer and any other processed foods and drinks, manufactured with artificially fluoridated water supplies.

http://www.fluoridealert.org/phosphate/overview.htm

These chemicals have long since been determined by the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS-Canada) and, Hazardous Materials Identification System (HMIS-U.S.) to be VERY TOXIC and Corrosive liquids. It would otherwise be against the law, to dump this chemical into our rivers, lakes, and oceans. Especially considering; these poisons were specifically intended for, and engineered to be removed (mandated environmental laws) from the emitted effluence of industry smokestacks…only to be then gathered up again, and dumped into our drinking water? How blatantly bizarre, and criminal, this premeditated act is.

Perhaps more importantly, and or suspiciously; these industrial poisonous pollutants, would otherwise bear a negative cost to the Phosphate, Aluminum, and Chemical Industries. In other words; the profit short falls would be into the hundreds of millions of dollars, per year, to otherwise safely dispose of it.

The perfect answer to any bottom line, in the CORPORATE world…business before pleasure.

Conveniently: it had been determined; dumping these poisonous industrial toxic pollutants into the public’s drinking water supplies, would somehow provide for “protection” against dental carries (cavities).

There should be far fewer doubts, in everyone’s opinion now, that HFS/HFSA is a pollutant, and, most definitely a contaminant too.

Health Canada: Fluoride and Human Health – It’s Your Health – July 2008

Most Canadians are exposed to fluorides on a daily basis, through trace amounts that are found in almost all foods and (drinks) through those that are added to drinking water supplies.

Excessive intakes (cigarettes cause cancer…therefore, smoke “LIGHT” cigarettes?) of fluoride will cause damage to tooth enamel, resulting in tooth pain and, problems with chewing.

High levels of fluorides, consumed for a very long (VERY LONG? – There’s no tangible or credible results, of just how long, very long is…hence very long) period of time, may lead to skeletal fluorosis.

These levels (purposely ignoring cumulative…build up effect) are much higher than those to which the average Canadian is exposed daily (“they,” HEALTH CANADA, et al, have no current and credible means of accurately determining the levels to which Canadians are exposed, to fluorides, on a daily basis…they should cease and desist in using such ambiguous phrases…it’s misleading, to say the least).

Skeletal fluorosis is a progressive disease, but not life threatening (my honest assessment of this HEALTH CANADA statement [not life threatening] is; who ever wrote that, must obviously have been a lobbyist for the fluoride industry or, a total idiot. Perhaps, as usual, they assumed that everyone else was. How can anyone not consider bones becoming brittle…living in pain on a daily basis…having stiff joints every day…having difficulty in moving, due to deformed bones and, being at a greater risk of bone fractures…not to be a threat to normal life?).

With all the obvious and controversial implications, i.e., risks to human, animal, ecological and environmental health…HEALTH CANADA continues to promote and endorse this commercial industrial grade “DRUG,” (fluoride), as being one of the most successful preventive health measures in the history of health care (dentistry).

What is behind the degree of HEALTH, that CANADA is truly providing?
